Node.js or Python for your project?
Node.js and Python are both available on app hosting. The choice is not about an abstract benchmark, but about the library you need, your team's skills and the shape of your traffic. These are the differences that change day-to-day work.
Two execution models
Node.js runs JavaScript on a single event loop. I/O (network, files, database) is non-blocking: one process handles many concurrent connections. On the other hand, heavy computation blocks the loop; use worker_threads or a separate service.
Python runs synchronously by default, with asyncio for concurrent code. The GIL limits CPU parallelism across threads; for computation, use processes or native libraries. FastAPI and discord.py rely on asyncio and behave well on the network.
Ecosystem
| Need | Node.js | Python |
|---|---|---|
| Discord bot | discord.js | discord.py |
| REST API | Express, Fastify | FastAPI, Flask |
| Real time | Very good (WebSocket) | Good with asyncio |
| Data and computation | Decent | Very rich (pandas, NumPy) |
| Code shared with the front end | Yes in TypeScript | No |
| Package management | npm + lockfile | pip + requirements.txt |
The table describes trends, not rules: you can build an API in Flask and a data script in Node.
Practical criteria
- Existing skills: a team fluent in Python ships faster, even if Node is theoretically a better fit.
- Critical library: check that it exists, is maintained and works with the offered runtime version.
- Traffic profile: many short connections and JSON favour Node; computation, machine learning or batch jobs favour Python.
- Maintenance: both ecosystems move fast; pick the one whose security advisories you can read.
- Plan limits: memory and CPU matter more than the language. A Python bot on a 512 MB plan may be enough; a Node API with an unbounded cache is not.
In both cases
- Read the port from
PORTand listen on0.0.0.0. - Pin dependencies (
package-lock.jsonor a pinnedrequirements.txt). - Keep secrets in panel variables.
- Write logs to
stdoutandstderr. - Measure memory before upgrading the plan.
Decide
Prototype for a day with your project's central library, on the real runtime. If installation fails, memory explodes or the library does not exist, the theoretical debate ends there. Choose what your team can deploy and maintain.
